Fetus Baby

It was Celebrate Life Sunday at Church – we were all there. I was with the Confirmation teens; Greg and Sophia were spending quality Daddy/Daughter time in the Hall, which was set up with various booths celebrating the occasion.

In Confirmation, Anna just finished her talk about our Catholic perspective that all life is sacred. She presented an example of how young children love taking care of baby dolls – they “know” in some way that babies are to be cuddled, loved, and taken care of. As I continued with my part of the talk, Sophia walked by where everyone could see. She was carrying her baby doll and something else. One boy yelled out, “She ripped the arm off her baby doll and is carrying it around!” People started to laugh. But then someone else yelled, “No! She is playing with a fetus baby!!!!!!!”

Sure enough, Sophia had taken a model of a 14 week old fetus baby (that was squishy and soft to make feel real) from the display in the Hall – and would not give it back. Greg explained to me later about how the fetus baby quickly had become her best friend. She hugged, kissed, and cuddled that fetus baby. During music time for the prek-4thgrade kids she danced with that fetus baby flailing it up and down and all around.

Anna yelled out above all the laughter, “this is very good theology!”

In the end it proved nearly impossible to separate her from that fetus baby, but we did manage (thanks to a split second of memory lapse on Sophia’s part) to get it back its rightful place in the womb before the next Mass was over.
